A Lavender Field Engagement session | Traverse City

August 18, 2025

There’s just something about lavender at golden hour that makes everything feel calm and effortless. I met up with Jon Paul and Emily at Brys Estate in Traverse City for their lavender engagement session, and the timing couldn’t have been better—the light was soft, the fields were in bloom, and the whole place had this quiet, romantic atmosphere.

Dancing in the Lavender

One thing I loved about this session is how much of them we were able to bring into it. JonPaul and Emily spend a lot of their free time dancing together, so it felt natural to weave that into the shoot. Watching them move together in the lavender rows wasn’t staged or forced—it was just who they are.

Golden Hour Simplicity

The light that evening was perfect. No fancy setups or tricks, just the two of them, the lavender, and the sun dipping lower on the horizon. The mix of soft color from the field and the golden glow gave everything a timeless feel—simple, natural, and beautiful.

Why Brys Estate Works So Well

Brys Estate has quickly become one of my favorite spots for engagement photos in Traverse City. Between the lavender, the vineyards, and the open sky, it has plenty of variety while still feeling peaceful and tucked away. For couples who want a backdrop that feels both unique and down to earth, it’s a great choice. And it helps that the owners are just wonderful to work with!

Tips for Engagement Photos in a Lavender Field

  • Best time of day: Golden hour (an hour or two before sunset) is ideal—the warm light pairs perfectly with the soft purple tones of lavender.
  • What to wear: Neutral/earthy colors, white & pastels photograph beautifully here. Light fabrics that move (like linen or flowy dresses) catch the breeze and add a natural look.
  • Shoes: Fields aren’t always heel-friendly, so comfortable shoes or sandals you don’t mind walking in are your best bet. Or even barefoot, if you’re up for it!
  • Timing: Lavender blooms are usually at their peak mid July – early August (in the Traverse City area), so plan your session around that window for the fullest fields.
