1. The best photographers here will have experience with Michigan weddings

You’re with your photographer more than nearly anyone else on your wedding day. Find someone whose vibe you actually like, and who can help you feel comfortable in front of the camera. Make sure to jump on a zoom call before you officially book.

Do their photos make you feel something? Look for consistency in editing, emotion, and storytelling — and make sure their portfolio isn’t just pretty but authentic.

4. The best photographer match will offer real support — not just pretty photos
A great Michigan wedding photographer helps with planning, timelines, family photo lists, lighting decisions, and navigating vendor chaos — not just showing up to snap a few photos.
Here is a whole breakdown of my wedding photography experience, for my couples
Red Flags to Avoid
- Unclear or too-good-to-be-true pricing. Unfortunately, you do get what you pay for. If it feels way too cheap, it probably comes at a cost.
- No full galleries. You want to see how they document an entire day — not just the highlights.
- No flash photos in their portfolio. This can mean they either don’t know how to use flash or don’t bring it — which can lead to really poor quality images once the sun sets. Think grainy, blurry, or way too dark. You deserve photos that look amazing all day (and night) long.
- No reviews. If no one’s publicly vouching for their work, it’s worth asking why. Client testimonials are a huge green flag — they show that not only did people like their photos, but they actually loved the experience, too.
- Overly posed photos. If every photo looks stiff or staged, you may not be seeing the real magic of the day — the genuine, unfiltered moments.
- Poor communication. If they’re slow to reply, vague, or hard to pin down during the planning process, that probably won’t get better on the wedding day.
Consider joining the “Michigan displeased brides” facebook group, to look into certain vendors you’re considering. If you ever have a bad gut feeling – trust that, and do more research.
