There’s something so dreamy about a Sleeping Bear Dunes proposal, especially in early fall when the colors start changing and the whole lakeshore feels warm and golden. Yash planned the sweetest moment for Mik at the iconic Empire Bluff Trail overlook. If you’ve walked this trail, you know how magical it is! The lake views, soft hills, and lighting are unreal.
After their proposal at Empire Bluff Trail, we explored a few of my favorite spots in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We took dune photos, walked the trail, and ended with golden hour portraits in the field before heading to Empire Beach. We wrapped up the night at Pierce Stocking Drive. It was candid, colorful, and so full of joy, everything I love about photographing surprise proposals in Northern Michigan!
If you’re planning your own proposal or looking for helpful guides about getting engaged, eloping, or getting married in Sleeping Bear Dunes, I’ve included a handful of resources at the end of this blog. They’re a great place to start if you’re dreaming up something special here in Northern Michigan!

Yash planned the sweetest Sleeping Bear Dunes proposal at the Empire Bluff Trail overlook, and the moment he asked, Mik’s whole face lit up! Her yellow dress caught the early fall sun perfectly, and his neutral outfit balanced it so well. A few of their family members were tucked just out of sight, and watching them step in afterward to hug and celebrate made the moment feel all the more special. That’s one thing I love about Empire Bluff Trail. You get this huge, peaceful overlook for the proposal, but it still feels intimate enough for family to be part of the joy without taking away from the moment.
After she said yes, we wandered through some of my favorite spots along the trail like the sandy dune paths, quiet pockets of greenery, and that soft, golden field that glows this time of year! The views of Lake Michigan were unreal, changing from bright turquoise to deep blues. Their outfits fit the natural colors so beautifully, giving everything a dreamy, candid feel. It’s why Empire Bluff Trail tops my 5 Top Places to Propose in Michigan blog. You get dunes, overlooks, wooded paths, wide-open fields, and those iconic lake views all in one place. If you’re dreaming up a Northern Michigan proposal that feels personal, scenic, and full of heart, this spot truly checks every box!

After leaving Empire Bluff Trail, we made a quiet stop at Empire Beach. It has a calm little stretch of shoreline tucked right into the edge of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The Robert H. Manning Memorial Lighthouse felt like the perfect place to slow down, breathe, and let the excitement of the proposal settle in.
Yash and Mik wandered along the water together, barefoot in the sand with Lake Michigan behind them. Empire Beach added this gentle, romantic pause in the middle of their Sleeping Bear Dunes proposal, and it gave us some of my favorite in-between moments of their day!

Our last stop was Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. It’s truly one of the most scenic overlooks inside the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The light softened as we walked up to the bluff, giving us that warm, early-fall glow that makes Lake Michigan look endless. Yash and Mik shared a little champagne to celebrate, wrapped up in the excitement of the day and the views around them. It was the perfect finishing touch to their Sleeping Bear Dunes proposal.
After leaving the overlook, they headed to The Riverside Inn in Leland for a cozy dinner with family. It was such a sweet way to end the evening with good food, good company, and all the post-proposal joy settling in!

Sleeping Bear Dunes will always be one of my favorite places for a Northern Michigan proposal. There’s something so peaceful and meaningful about this area. I just love the dunes, the overlook trails, the lake views, and the way the light changes every hour. It’s a place where moments feel a little more intentional, and that’s why it has my heart when it comes to proposals and engagement sessions.
