On a recent trip to Sedona, Arizona – my best friend and I were hiking one of the trails (legs burning, hearts full), when we reached the top of the mountain and met John and Jacquelyn.
They had just gotten married and were on their honeymoon!
I couldn’t help myself. I asked (half expecting a polite no) if they’d be up for a few impromptu portraits. To my joy, they said yes. What followed was one of the most beautiful, unexpected sessions I’ve ever had the honor to photograph.
Not only were they ridiculously sweet and madly in love — we also discovered we shared something even deeper: a love for Jesus.
Right there on the mountain, the four of us stood in a little prayer circle. We prayed over their marriage, over that sacred moment, and thanked God for the way he weaves stories together in ways we never see coming.
It was one of those experiences that reminded me why I do this — not just to capture beautiful photos (though you have to scroll to see these!), but to witness real moments, real faith, and real connection.
To John & Jacquelyn — thank you for letting me be a small part of your beginning. Your love, your joy, your openness — it all left such a mark.
And to my best friend, Court: thanks for always being down to hike with me, to laugh through the sweat, and to stand in awe when the ordinary turns holy.
If you’re planning a trip to Sedona (whether for fun, a photo session, or both), here are a few trails I’ll never forget:
Cathedral Rock
Short but steep — and so worth the climb. The views at the top feel sacred, especially at golden hour.
Devil’s Bridge
A must-see if you’re up for a moderate hike. The sandstone arch makes an epic photo spot — just go early to beat the crowds.
Soldier Pass Trail
A quieter, more unique trail that passes caves, a sinkhole, and tons of character.
Bell Rock
Beginner-friendly and super scenic. A great spot if you’re short on time or want to keep things low-key.
Fay Canyon
Peaceful, shady, and perfect for a relaxed hike. Bonus: it’s super photogenic.
Want photos in the red rocks? Here’s what I recommend to help it go smoothly (and beautifully):
⏰ Pick the right time
Sunrise and sunset offer the best lighting — and way fewer people. Make sure to check which is more appealing at a specific location (for example, sometimes a specific location isn’t that great for sunrise, but has an epic sunset!)
🥾 Know the trails
Sedona hikes can be steep or rocky, even if labeled “easy.” I’ll guide you on what to expect and help you choose the best spot for your vibe. Always give ample time!
🎒 Pack smart
Water, snacks, layers — desert temps swing quick. I bring a mini adventure kit, but come prepared!
📸 Outfit tips
Flowy dresses + Sedona red rocks = magic. But we also want shoes with grip and layers you can easily change into on the trail. Consider wearing hiking attire, and a backpack that contains your actual outfit)
📍 Permit talk
Some trails need a Red Rock Pass or other permits. I’ve got you covered and can help sort out the logistics.
🧘 Stay flexible
The best photos come when we let go of a rigid plan. We’ll leave space for spontaneous moments, breathers, and trail magic.
As a destination wedding and elopement photographer, I travel all over the country (and beyond!) to document love stories in the most breathtaking places. From the red rocks of Sedona to the shores of Lake Michigan, the Smoky Mountains, and everywhere in between — I specialize in capturing adventurous, heartfelt, and intentional moments for couples who crave something a little off the beaten path. Whether you’re planning a mountaintop elopement, an intimate beach ceremony, or a just-because session while traveling, I’m always ready to pack my bags and meet you there.
