Top 6 Engagement Session Locations at the Sleeping Bear Dunes

March 28, 2025

If you’re considering an engagement session at Sleeping Bear Dunes, this is your sign to do it. There’s a reason you’re considering this location – it’s because it’s epic and beautiful. After traveling quite literally all over the world – this is still one of my favorite areas for capturing beautiful & authentic love stories.

To help you pick the perfect setting, I’ve put together my top 6 engagement session locations at the sleeping bear dunes

1. Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive – Overlook #9 & #10

If you’re looking for those wide open, cinematic views – the overlooks on Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive are hard to beat. Overlook #9 gives you a wide-open view of the dunes rolling into Lake Michigan, while #10 offers a slightly different angle, with a perfect spot to sit on the edge and take it all in. This is hands down my FAVORITE location at the sleeping bear dunes, which is why it so easily landed my most loved photo locations at sleeping bear dunes as number 1. You feel like you’re in a different country..actually a different world entirely, it’s just so breathtaking. I will never get over Lake Michigan.

Why it’s a good choice:

  • You can those epic wide shots you’ve been dreaming about, because there is so much space here. It’s massive feeling! (and even if there’s a bunch of other people, if you’re photographer is like me – they can just edit those bad boys out. While some photographers may charge extra for this, I include extensive editing)
  • At sunset, the light hits the sand in this golden, ethereal way that makes everything feel really warm and magical. There’s also all these beautiful tuffs of grass everywhere on the right side, that look golden during sunset.
  • Because of all the room, you can really get away from the crowds with some candid walking or quiet, cozy moments, even with all the people that may be there. There’s always little nooks and crannies that you can hide away in.
  • It offers variety between the dunes, piercing blue water, and there are these beautiful trees that provide green (or fall colors in September/October) foliage. This helps for shade if you’re there when it’s sunny. Also the whole walk way has gorgeous greenery that can be used for dramatic portraits, as well.
  • It is a very short walk, if you’re not looking to hike. It’s a ten minute drive from the entrance-ish, but once you park, the walk is quite short compared to the other scenic locations around Empire.
  • There are public outdoor restrooms (no, they are not the most stellar outdoor restrooms you’ll ever use. They smell dreadful. But it’s something haha)
  • Pups are allowed, but only by leash! Check out this link to read more, on which parks allow dogs at the Sleeping bear dunes

Tips:

These overlooks are popular (for good reason), so for a more private vibe, go at sunrise or on a weekday evening. This location requires a pass. So, don’t be alarmed when driving in – you’ll need to stop and pay for one before entering. You can also purchase one online here. Make sure to plan ahead. Parking can be tricky if it’s during peak season (summer & fall) Get there early to avoid stress with parking!!

2. Empire Bluff Trail

If you’re up for a short, scenic hike, Empire Bluff Trail is worth every step. The path winds through these tall woods, before opening up to a jaw-dropping view of Lake Michigan from the bluff. It’s a perfect mix of forest and expansive scenery, giving you a lot of variety all in one spot. This is such a close second for me to pierce stocking. Like…when I tell you these views are just incredible. Like stop you in your tracks kind of views because the water is SO blue, and the waves look like they were painted there, behind the dunes, right in front of your eyes. It gives so much texture to photos. This location also includes a cute little golden field right at the entrance. This is the location I recommend to all my adventurous hiking couples, who want a lot of variety within one location.

Why it’s a great pick:

  • The dreamy, golden field right before the hike. This is often overlooked. Everyone goes to this location for the dunes and water, completely missing this gem of a field right before the hike begins. This locations offers so so much variety, I’m telling you!
  • The wooded trail is perfect for sweet, candid walking shots. This also gives a more moody vibe, if that’s your cup of tea. Sometimes the light will poke through the trees just right, for those fun lighting shots.

  • There’s a little stop on the way to the main overlook, that’s so pretty (I actually captured a proposal there once!)
Spot I mentioned, on the way to the main overlook
  • The overlook itself makes for breathtaking, wide-angle portraits. If you’re looking for those epic tropical vibe photos, this is the perfect spot.
  • The light here is soft and golden in the evening, perfect for natural, golden hour photos. But don’t sleep on blue hour (that hour right after sunset, when the sky looks like cotton candy – ooff, never gets old)
  • Public restrooms (again, not my first pick for a bathroom, but it does the job, ya feel me?)
  • Pups are welcome! But there’s usually a good amount of other dogs there, as well. So just keep that in mind if your dog gets anxious around other people or animals.

Tip:

Bring shoes you can walk in—the trail is about 1.5 miles round trip—but feel free to swap into something fancier once we hit the overlook. It does have a slight incline. I’ve noticed my hiking clients have no problem, but some of my clients who don’t hike often find it a bit tiring. Pierce stocking will be the best bet for those wanting to avoid the hike altogether – and there’s nothing wrong with that, if that’s you. There’s a trail for everyone (listed above)! This trail gets more narrow at the top of the dune, and when there’s a lot of people – it can feel a little crowded. Keep this in mind when choosing a day and time. If you’re going a weekend date in the summer, it will most likely be really really busy, and you may feel like you have a whole audience watching. Now if you don’t mind that – who cares. I’ll note that most of my couples either choose week day evenings or sunrise on a weekend to avoid feeling like there’s a whole paparazzi.

3. Treat Farm Trail

If you want seclusion and variety, Treat Farm Trail is the spot-like truly a hidden gem. I almost wanted to gate keep this one – but felt like that wasn’t fair because everyone should get a chance to have their photos taken here. I have had so many other photographers and brides reach out, after seeing my photos, asking me for the details on this location, because it’s a little secret to the public community. While the first two options I mentioned are widely known, this one offers you more privacy for sure. This lesser-known trail offers lush forests, open meadows, and a charming old farmstead. The trail leads to an overlook with sweeping views of the dunes and Lake Michigan, making it feel like a secret hideaway. My number 3, in my top engagement session location at sleeping bear dunes.

Why it’s a good choice:

  • The farm buildings add a rustic, vintage touch to your photos. This adds a lot of character and texture to images. Theres also these little steps just to the right, when you get to the entrance of the farm buildings. Those are fun to incorporate in & offer stunning fall colors, during the fall season.
  • The wooded trail offers intimate, shaded shots with dreamy light filtering through the trees.
  • The field is that like dreamy golden field you envision when you think of golden field portraits. So beautiful!
  • The dune overlook makes for epic, wide-angle portraits.

  • Pups are welcome, but just be cautious – I did spot a bear there once. It was just doing its. things, didn’t bother us. Sad it didn’t want it’s photo taken, but my pride will stay in tact. Anywhoo – leashing is probably best!

Tip:

Since it’s less traveled, Treat Farm Trail is perfect for couples who want a more private, relaxed session. It’s especially beautiful in late summer and early fall when the fields are golden. All the photos I am attaching are fall examples, from late September of 2023. There is no actual parking lot. You may wonder, “huh-am I in the right place?” when you get there. The answer is yes, it’s just not super obvious parking. Its kind of along a dirt road, with a subtle sign.

The trailhead is marked by a locked gate on the northwest corner of Norconk Road 2 miles south of the Phillip Hart Visitor Center on M-22 and M-72 in Empire. Parking is on the side of the road.

4. Empire Beach

If you want classic “Up North” beach vibes with a side of epic sunset potential, Empire Beach is the spot. It offers soft sand, dune grass, and Lake Michigan’s crystal-clear water, all with a view of Sleeping Bear Dunes in the distance. Plus, the pier adds a cool, laid-back touch for some variety in your shots.

Why it’s a great pick:

  • The beach is perfect for barefoot, carefree photos.
  • You can actually get into the water for some shots!! At the other locations, the water is at a far distance (and they charge a hefty fee to come rescue you, if you roll on down the hill haha, so probs not the best idea)
  • The sunset views here? Chef’s kiss.
  • If you happen to have children, there’s a little park that’s right there.
  • If Lake Michigan is too cold for you, there’s a much warmer & calmer “North Bar Lake” right across from Lake Michigan. It’s so fun – you get the best of both worlds.
  • Also, it’s been awhile since I’ve used it for photography – but there’s this huge willow tree that’s really pretty for photos, during the spring! It’s to the right, when you drive in.
  • Public restrooms – but these ones are usually not as terrifying as the others.

Tip:

Bring a light blanket or cozy wrap for seated shots on the sand—it adds a little texture and keeps you comfy if the wind picks up.

5. The Dune Climb

If you’re up for a bit of adventure, the Dune Climb is absolutely worth it. The big open dunes create a minimalist, almost otherworldly landscape. It’s perfect for couples who love the idea of running through the sand or just letting loose. This spot is perfect for those who are really active & up for a more challenging hike. The views are ABSOLUTELY worth it.

Why it’s a great pick:

  • The endless sand hills make for striking, clean compositions.
  • The soft, golden hues at sunset create a warm, dreamy atmosphere.
  • Great for movement-filled shots—think walking hand in hand or playful, carefree moments.
  • At sunset, the sky here often lights up with soft pinks and golds, making the whole scene glow.

Tip:

The sand here has a way of sneaking into your shoes, so barefoot sessions are the way to go.

6. Esch Beach

For laid-back vibes, Esch Beach (also called Otter Creek Beach) is a dreamy spot. It’s less crowded than some of the more popular beaches in the area, making it feel secluded and peaceful. The beach itself has soft sand, gentle waves, and grassy dunes, creating a relaxed and romantic atmosphere.

Why it’s a great pick:

  • The quiet, off-the-beaten-path vibe makes it feel intimate and special.
  • The mix of sand, water, and beach grass adds texture and variety to your photos.

Tip:

The parking lot is on the smaller side, but this location has always felt more low key, compared to others. It’s not as well known. But still something to keep in mind, because it’s pretty tiny. But you can also park down along the road, as well.

Tips for Your Sleeping Bear Dunes Engagement Session

  • Go for golden hour. The light is softer, warmer, and way more flattering. Plus, Sleeping Bear sunsets are pure magic. But don’t leave before Blue hour, because it’s just as beautiful – but in a different way.
  • Wear layers and neutrals. Earthy tones and flowing fabrics look gorgeous against the dunes. And since it can get breezy, a light sweater or shawl is never a bad idea.
  • Be ready for a little sand. The best photos often come from being spontaneous—whether that means kicking off your shoes or just going with the wind.
