What is a Micro Wedding?

March 17, 2025

Michigan micro weddings are becoming increasingly popular for couples who want an intentional, elevated alternative to a traditional wedding day. If you’re here, you may be wondering what a micro wedding really is and whether it’s right for you. While many people assume micro weddings are just shorter or budget-driven, they’re actually about slowing the day down and focusing on what matters most.

MICRO WEDDING DEFINITION

Micro-weddings are so much more than that, and honestly they’re usually still the length of a typical day.

I’m here to explain what a micro wedding is AND what makes having one so unique and different from a traditional wedding.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MICRO & LARGE WEDDING

A micro wedding is a smaller intimate wedding celebration, with your closest friends and family (usually no more than 100 guests, but no exact amount. It’s more about the vibe & being intimate vs a massive gathering). It may be shorter, but it also can be the same length as a full traditional wedding. Sometimes they are local, other time you can travel to another location, which would make it a destination micro wedding.

Aside from the number of guests, a micro wedding is also usually more relaxed and has a flexible timeline. It’s very similar to a traditional wedding, minus a lot of the bells & whistles. The focus in a traditional wedding is more on the guests, where as with a micro wedding – the focus is more on the couple. Usually with traditional weddings, there is a lot of stress over food, drinks, party favors, providing a full reception experience around dances, mapped out by a DJ. A traditional wedding means having a larger audience, and the timeline being packed with more traditional specialties.

A traditional wedding may not be meant for you if you’re already stressing over…

  1. Having a huge audience. Maybe you’re feeling really uncomfortable with the idea of hundreds of people staring at you, as you walk down the aisle.
  2. Hurting feelings of those who don’t make the cut of a large guest list. Maybe you’re worried you’ll make certain people feel bad by inviting others, because your list is already so long, but inviting everyone would be so overwhelming
  3. The thought of a fast paced wedding timeline. Maybe you’re concerned about your wedding day feeling go, go, go with no breaks – where you barely remember it at the end of the day.
  4. The time it takes to plan a massive event.
  5. The costs of planning a huge event.
  6. Getting exhausted, but feeling like you can’t leave because everyones there for you.
  7. Not being able to have your wedding at the location you really want, because people can’t make the trip.
  8. Feeling rushed and anxious over greeting all your guests throughout the evening

A micro wedding may be the perfect match for you if…

  1. You want an intimate crowd. You want only the people you genuinely feel fully comfortable to be yourself around. You want to have more intentional interactions with your guests, in a relaxed setting.
  2. You want the day to be more about your love and celebrating that commitment to one another, vs a big celebration that’s focused on the guests and their experience.
  3. You want to travel somewhere special to get married.
  4. You want to cut down expenses, and splurge on the things that really matter to you, like photography, a band, or private chef.
  5. You want a super relaxed timeline
  6. You want a documentary photography approach
  7. You want to enjoy the day without getting exhausted by the end of it
  8. You still want guests because that’s important to you, but you don’t want people you barely talk to or haven’t seen in years attending, because it feels overwhelming.

Most of my micro wedding couples have expressed the reason they want to have a micro-wedding is they want their day to feel intimate, and don’t want to feel stressed trying to put on a whole show for everyone else. They describe wanting a more low key and relaxing experience.

If this is you, a micro wedding may be exactly what you need!

WHY MICRO WEDDINGS ARE SPECIAL AND UNIQUE

So what makes them so special?

Easy.

They make the timeline less stressful, allowing you to really enjoy your day. There isn’t as much packed into the day. So it feels more low key. You can have more intentional conversations with your guests – people you’re actually really close with in your every day life. No feeling rushed, trying to get to the next table. You can splurge on a private chef or that dream photographer you’ve been eyeing up for years, because costs will be a lot lower with a smaller guest list. No feeling awkward or uncomfortable with having this massive audience watching your every move. You get to focus more on your partner, vs trying to please all your guests & make sure everyone is enjoying your wedding.

I could go on and on about how much I love micro weddings, but hopefully this gives you a solid gist.
